Dundula staff and students attended the Bakers Creek memorial service today to honour those American serviceman who lost their lives in the aviation disaster on 14 June, 1943.
A US Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft crashed at Bakers Creek, Mackay on this date 8km from the airfield. 40 military service personnel on board were killed; one person survived the crash. The crash is Australia's deadliest aviation disaster by death toll and was the deadliest accident involving an aircraft in the south-western Pacific during World War 2.
Staff and students from Dundula SS attend this service, annually, to honour those who died. The Bakers Creek propellor memorial forms part of the Dundula SS crest as part of our school emblem. Dundula SS will continue to attend this yearly memorial service to ensure this story is told each year to our students - an historical event which is very close to home.
